Oregon extends its wildfire insurance cancellation pause to October 29
Oregon extends its wildfire insurance cancellation pause to October 29
2026-10-05 · Oregon · Regulation
What happened. On September 29, 2026, Oregon's Division of Financial Regulation extended its wildfire emergency order by another 30 days, to October 29, 2026.1 The order had been set to lapse around the end of September, as described in our earlier report on the order and association master policies.
What the extension keeps in place
According to the Division's announcement, the order continues to require property and casualty insurers to suspend cancellations and nonrenewals in the affected wildfire areas, to allow grace periods for premium payments, and to extend deadlines for policyholders to report claims.1 Local press coverage describes the same 30-day renewal of the protections.2
The affected areas are defined by ZIP code in bulletins the Division issues, rather than in the order itself. The Division's release does not say whether association master policies are addressed separately.
How this connects to association master policies
The original July 31 order is directed to “all admitted insurers that provide any type of property and casualty insurance coverage in Oregon” and applies to “all insurance policies issued, delivered, or covering a risk in the affected geographic areas”3 That wording does not limit the order to homeowner policies. Whether it reaches an association master policy on a building in an affected ZIP code is, on this record, a reasoned inference from the order's text, not a point the regulator has confirmed. Neither the original order nor the September 29 release addresses master policies by name.1
The notice period in the original order
The original order provides that, once it is no longer in effect, insurers must give 30 days' notice for cancellations under ORS 742.562(2), 746.687(6) and 742.710(1)(a).3 That notice period is tied to the order lifting. The Division's September 29 release does not describe any change to it.1
What to watch next
The order now runs to October 29, 2026. The first extension, on August 26, 2026, was also for 30 days.4 Whether the Division extends the order again, lets it lapse, or changes the covered ZIP codes will be set out in its own announcements.
